The 18th-Century: The word "vampire" (derived from the Slavic upir) entered Western European languages in the early 1700s following a wave of mass hysteria in Central and Eastern Europe. At the time, pre-industrial societies did not understand the natural processes of human decomposition. When grave exhumers found corpses with receding gums, growing hair and nails, or blood leaking from the mouth, they misinterpreted these signs as evidence that the deceased were actively feeding on the living. Reports of these "grave chewers" spread across the continent, prompting a frenzy of stake-wielding, corpse-burning, and public executions of those accused of vampirism.
