Miasma: Plague doctors used iconic bird-like masks to protect themselves from "miasma" (foul, poisonous air). Historically, this eerie beak was filled with fragrant herbs, spices, and vinegar-soaked sponges. While their miasma theory was incorrect, the head-to-toe protective leather inadvertently acted as an early hazmat suit against plague-carrying fleas.
